This was written fairly early in his career, favorite driver being written about by favorite author, Peter Egan, Road & Track, September ‘88, Senna at Monaco (of course) short enough I think it falls under fair use doctrine.

If you didn’t know this story you are welcome, if you did you know it doesn’t end all that well, an amazing talent, RIP.

Yes, September 1988, I have it in hard copy, couldn't find it on a Google search, you can usually pick them up on eBay for a few bucks if you are patient.

One of my favorite writers and one of the main reasons I’m a car/bike guy - hours of pouring over his articles in Road & Track and Cycle World as a kid

I am more of a car than a bike guy, but dabbled in bikes long ago. I remember a great story I read about how the auth or’s plan to ride a Honda CB400F Super Sport cross country was a little crazy on such a “small” bike. When I re-read the story a few years ago I noticed the author was Peter Egan. I have not had a chance to meet the man, but I have had a chance to drive through the Wisconsin Dells in a proper British sports car, felling like I was in one of his stories come to life.

Was the CB400f story by any chance the one where he drove to Florida to get coffee? I have Leanings 1 & 2, the books compiled from his cycle world stories. I don’t ride as much now, but in my late teens and early twenties I identified a lot with taking road trips on sketchy old motorcycles (which by that point were a good few decades older then when he was doing it). I have neither been to Wisconsin or driven a proper British sports car, but thanks to his writing it’s definitely on the bucket list

It has been a little while since I read the story, I just remember the parts about owning Honda 50s and 90s and such before moving up to the “big” 400.
